NC By Train hosts $5 summer fares for kids

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Kids can ride the state-funded Amtrak service within North Carolina this summer for just $5.

NC By Train, a division of the North Carolina Department of Transportation, is offering the special one-way fare on Carolinian and Piedmont trains between Charlotte and Raleigh with stops in Cary, Durham, Burlington, Greensboro, High Point, Salisbury and Kannapolis.

The sale runs through Sept. 4 over Labor Day weekend.

Certain restrictions apply and the sale can only be used for children between the ages of two and 12 who are riding with someone paying the full-fare adult price. 

The typical fare is $27.

Discount code "V256" is applied to the reservation to apply the discount.

Starting July 10, a fifth daily Piedmont train will begin operation. The new train will depart Raleigh at 1 p.m. with a 4:10 p.m. arrival time in Charlotte. That same train will then depart Charlotte at 5:30 p.m. to return to Raleigh at 8:29 p.m.

The Carolinian, with service between Charlotte and New York, is only eligible for the sale fare for travel within the state of North Carolina. The Crescent, with service between New Orleans and New York with some stops in North Carolina, is not eligible.
