CHARLOTTE, N.C. — On Friday, travelers described the scene at Charlotte Douglas International Airport as "travel chaos".
The airport is undergoing some extensive renovations and people are left feeling the impact. Traffic was backed up, stretching all the way from the departures and arrivals areas to the entrance. Some travelers who spoke to WCNC Charlotte said they were seeing a lot of red.
In addition to being red from anger, passengers trying to drive into the airport saw plenty of red brake lights. The backup is mainly due to the canopy project that's underway. Construction for it closed down the upper deck and funneled arrivals and departures into one area.
Nieada Christian, a traveler said, the road into the airport is an all-around mess.
"The traffic is murder, it is a mess out here," Christian said.
Other travelers said they were glad they chose to get in earlier because they were scared to miss a flight from the congestion. Some even walked into the airport from the remote parking areas.
A statement from airport leadership underscored that this construction is part of a larger project:
Canopy construction at the Terminal Lobby Expansion continues. We are working to mitigate traffic congestion. Customers should continue to expect roadway congestion similar to holiday periods of up to or more than an hour. CMPD is assisting with traffic flow and advises customers use the Billy Graham Parkway entrance to the Airport. Passengers are also advised to arrive at least two hours prior to departure time.
