CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Passengers coming through Charlotte on late flights Sunday night were stranded at Charlotte Douglas International Airport due to reported breakdowns in baggage claim.
Several passengers told WCNC Charlotte that multiple baggage claim units broke down, forcing them to just sit and wait. Even worse, many travelers say airport staff didn't have any guidance on when their bags would arrive or where they'd end up.
There appeared to be a lot of confusion and frustration at the American Airlines baggage claim area, where some folks waited anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour for their luggage. Dominic Denoso said he was told by an employee that it was a conveyor belt issue holding up the bags.
"First the conveyor belts for where the bags were going to go is not functional and then the bags to rerouted all over to different parts of the airport without any information from American Airlines," Denoso said.
Another passenger was already running late due to delays on a flight from Florida to the Queen City. Ezer Gill said he was forced to spend the night in Charlotte before finishing the second leg of his trip to Dayton, Ohio, on Monday.
"I've got to stay the night here and still haven't found my bag yet, so I don't know what to do right now," Gill said. "I'm just going to keep searching. I'm just going to keep bothering people until I get some answers because that's all I can do."
A spokesperson for Charlotte Douglas told WCNC Charlotte Monday morning that all baggage claim units are operating normally and there were "no reports" of any issues. As of 7 a.m., all baggage claim units appeared to be working normally with no delays.
