CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Douglas International Airport says the new outdoor canopy will be completed within a few months.
The 146,000-square-foot canopy is being built over the eight lanes of traffic in front of the passenger terminal. The canopy will provide shelter to passengers arriving and departing the airport.
In an Instagram post Wednesday, the airport said the canopy will be finished "in a few months."

The canopy is just one part of a $3.1 billion capital investment to expand the passenger terminal.
Years of construction are expanding the ticketing and security areas in the passenger terminal.
The Queen City's airport has seen a surge of growth over the past two decades as the number of passengers has nearly doubled.
Back in 2015, construction started to revamp the growing airport. In 2017, the airport outlined the different projects it planned to take on over the following three years. The first part of the project led to some new gates. It involved four projects that were broken up into phases. The elevated roadway and terminal curb front were scheduled to be completed in 2019. Both the expansion of Concourse A and the East Terminal was to be done in 2019. The terminal renovations were to be completed by 2020, too.
Airport officials are hoping to bring new life to a building that opened back in 1982. Those changes will increase space for passengers while adding more security and ticketing areas. That project broke ground in December 2019 and is projected to finish by 2025.
