Charlotte airport to get $32 million in federal grant money for concourse improvement

Charlotte Douglas International Airport will receive $32 million in federal funding for improvements to Concourse E, U.S. Rep. Jeff Jackson announced.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Douglas International Airport will get $32 million in federal funding for its "Concourse E Improvement Project," Rep. Jeff Jackson announced Monday.

The money is coming from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Terminals Program through the Federal Aviation Administration. Concourse E is the primary gateway for regional flights at Charlotte Douglas.

"CLT is critical to the connectivity of the Southeast United States to the global economy, making Charlotte a center for business," Jackson said in a statement. "This grant will ensure CLT is able to continue to be one of the busiest airports in the world and sustain the growth of our thriving region."

The project will modernize the 120,000-square-foot concourse to update hold rooms, restrooms and other high-traffic areas. All updates will adhere to Americans with Disabilities Act regulations, increase passenger capacity and increase energy efficiency.

Airport officials said the terminal lobby expansion, which began in 2019 as part of the $3.1 billion Destination CLT investment, is on track to open in 2025. As part of the project, security checkpoint B will close on March 17 and remain closed through the summer travel season.

Right now, there are five security checkpoints at the Charlotte airport. Once the addition of 175,000 more square feet of terminal and lobby space is completed, there will only be three.

Those three checkpoints will have the same amount of security lanes, airport officials said that makes it more efficient.
