Charlotte Douglas packed through the holiday, with lingering impacts from weekend weather

There were hundreds of delays at Charlotte Douglas Sunday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Millions of travelers are expected to pack airports and roads on Monday as the long Labor Day holiday weekend wraps up.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials expected a record 12 million people to fly nationwide over the long weekend, and Charlotte Douglas International Airport was among the busiest in the country.

Bad weather from over the weekend is adding to the chaos at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. There were 497 total delays at Charlotte's airport on Sunday, according to FlightAware, and 141 cancellations. 

By 6 a.m. Monday, there had been 28 delays and 29 cancellations at Charlotte Douglas. By 1:30 p.m., that had grown to 145 delays and 29 cancellations. 

WCNC Charlotte's Richard DeVayne spoke with travelers impacted by the delays, and saw multiple travelers who had to spend the night at the airport.

"Oh man, it was so hard," one man said. "I've never seen anything like that before, that was my first time. It's kind of hard, very hard -- and you have to sleep in the airport, you ain't got nowhere to go."
