CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As WCNC Charlotte continues to track the impacts of severe weather across the Carolinas on Tuesday, we also kept an eye on the skies for travelers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
Severe weather can mean delays or even cancellations for flights into and out of the Queen City. Even ahead of the worst of the storms Tuesday, flight-tracking tool FlightAware already reported a handful of issues at the airport.
As of Tuesday night, there were about 80 cancellations and over 600 flights were delayed.
The Federal Aviation Authority ordered a ground stop at the airport shortly after 1 p.m., which had a ripple effect on flights.

American Airlines' cancellation policy
American Airlines, which is the largest airline that operates out of Charlotte Douglas International Airport, promises travelers affected by severe weather or other uncontrollable events may be able to change trips with no change fee. A current travel alerts page on the airline's website shows the Charlotte airport among the airports affected by severe weather Tuesday.
The change fee is waived if the following applies to the traveler:

- If you bought your ticket before Jan. 8, 2024
- If you are scheduled to travel between Jan. 9-10, 2024
- If you can travel between Jan. 9-15, 2024
- If you do not change your origin or destination city
- If you rebook in the same cabin or pay the difference
These changes must be booked before Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024, and travel must be finished within one year of the original ticket date. Differences in fare may apply.
