Fourth parallel runway coming to CLT airport

Charlotte Douglas International Airport officials said the updates will both improve capacity and operational safety for the airport.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A fourth parallel runway is coming to Charlotte Douglas International Airport. It's scheduled for commissioning in fall 2027, according to airport leadership.

The addition comes alongside a taxiway system, end-around taxiways aimed at letting aircraft move more efficiently to the runway for takeoff or the gates after landing, as well as a de-icing pad, a relocated road, and a new aircraft rescue and firefighting station.

Airport officials said the updates will both improve capacity and operational safety for the airport, especially the 10,000-foot-long by 150-foot-wide runway, which will serve departing traffic.

The fourth parallel runway will be the first runway commissioned at the airport in over 10 years. The last runway was commissioned in February 2010.

Some travelers told WCNC Charlotte's Austin Walker they are excited about what this expansion might bring, but worry that if more flights come in and out, it will create more clusters.
