Spirit Airlines announces new nonstop flights from Charlotte

Spirit Airlines has emphasized better customer service to become profitable, especially at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Spirit Airlines announced it will soon offer new non-stop service out of Charlotte Douglas International Airport

Starting March 5, 2025, Spirit will offer direct, daily service to Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers. The new route comes after Spirit upgraded some of its customer perks at Charlotte's airport, including priority check-in.

"Southwest Florida is a great spring break getaway for Charlotte travelers looking to enjoy the beaches, sunsets and other outdoor activities and family and friends," John Kirby, Spirit's vice president of network planning, said.

The economy airline has emphasized improved customer service lately, especially in Charlotte. Spirit announced last month that it will offer flights to New Orleans beginning in October. The route will run five times a week.

Spirit is moving away from its budget status to include more perks for travelers. The Florida-based airline announced a "Go Big" package in July, giving customers priority check-in, bigger seats, snacks, drinks, a checked bag, a carry-on bag and free WiFi.

“We listened to our guests and are excited to deliver what they want: choices for an elevated experience that are affordable and provide unparalleled value,” CEO Ted Christie said in a statement issued by Spirit.

Spirit hasn't made a full-year profit since 2019, losing nearly $2.4 billion since, according to the Associated Press, leading many airline experts to wonder if the company known for its bright yellow jets could file bankruptcy.
