CHARLOTTE, N.C. — If you’ve recently tried to book a flight for domestic travel, you know the cost can be shocking. According to the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, airfare has increased 37.8% from May 2021 to May 2022.
That said, there are some good deals to be had for international travel because tourism hasn’t picked up to pre-pandemic levels. There are some things you should be aware of before you board a flight to a foreign destination.
WCNC Charlotte is always asking "where's the money?" If you need help, reach out to WCNC Charlotte by emailing money@wcnc.com.
Here are 5 things to know before traveling abroad according to information from the Better Business Bureau:
1) What’s included in the ticket price
Airlines can charge extra for a variety of things. Seat selection, baggage fees, in-flight Wi-fi and entertainment, and even printing a boarding pass can all come with an additional fee.
2) The airline’s rules for changing or canceling your reservation
It’s not unusual to pay a fee to change or cancel your flight. While many airlines continue to have their easy cancellation pandemic policies in place, there are nuances and details to understand should you need to change or cancel. Some airlines might not offer refunds to the original payment method and instead issue travel vouchers to use at a later date.
3) Visa fees and guidelines
Many countries have changed the cost of a visa and how long it’s valid.
4) Currency exchange
To get the most bang for your US buck, avoid changing dollars at the airport or a major hotel. The rates tend to be higher in those places. Instead, use a local ATM to get local currency.
5) Cell phone roaming
Make sure you understand your cell phone provider's roaming charges before your trip. Many providers offer temporary plans for foreign travel when you’re away from your local coverage area.
