PERRYVILLE, Alaska — One of the largest earthquakes to occur around Alaska and the United States happened over 64 miles southeast of Perryville, Alaska. This major 8.2 magnitude earthquake triggered a Tsunami Warning along the southern Alaska coast but luckily maximum waves only reached only about 1-2. Extended advisories are likely due to continued aftershocks.

Alaska is no stranger to earthquakes, but this M 8.2 made the top 10 list for largest to occur around the United States. This is the strongest earthquake recorded in 35 years and was the 7th strongest on record. This tied the magnitude of another earthquake off the Alaskan Peninsula back in 1938.

More aftershocks are still possible from this earthquake and southern Alaska should and will be on alert over the next few days.
