CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Bundle up! Charlotte saw its coldest temperature of 2023 Wednesday morning with a low of 23 degrees being recorded by the WCNC Charlotte Weather Team.
The Wednesday low temperature, which typically occurs right before sunrise, hit the forecast of 23 degrees in Charlotte. It was officially the coldest temperatures of 2023 thus far. The previous low was 24 degrees on Jan. 15.
Many will remember the brisk cold snap of last Christmas Eve 2022. That temperature reached 9 degrees and sits in the record book for 2022.
Temperatures were even colder Wednesday across the higher elevations of the western North Carolina foothills and mountains.
Low temperatures in Charlotte this time of year typically reach about 37 degrees. Low temperatures during the first half of this year have been below the average.

Official temperature observations for all of Charlotte are observed by the National Weather Service at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Even if a colder temperature occurs elsewhere in the city, it is the airport temperature that becomes an official part of the historic record.
