Breaking down the numbers for February and meteorological winter

The 2020-21 winter record-keeping closes in the meteorology world. How this winter ranked and a look at some February 2020 stats.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Can you believe it! The book closes on the 2020-21 winter season officially on March 1, where the meteorology world and the National Weather Service switches over the Spring record keeping. Winter is broken down into three months: December, January and February.

Here is the recap of where we are finishing:

The highest temperature was hit two days in a row recently to end the month on Feb. 24 and Feb 25. There was nothing really special or record-breaking about this winter. No major records were broken and nothing was extreme -- 17 degrees was the coldest temperature recorded, which was a colder low compared to the last two winters.

Snow lovers again did not get what they hoped but March always brings a lingering chance to the last snow, but hope will be dwindling heading into April. Our total this time around, 0.3", is the same total as what we had last year. This marks another below-average winter for snowfall.

This winter was nothing too cold nor too warm.

Averaging the lows and highs together equaled 44.2 degrees which is the 46th on record. Precipitation totals were also far less than the last two years. Last year and 2018-19 were both in the top 15 for the wettest winters on record. This year will finish as the 55th wettest.

February wasn't snatching record books either.

Highs hit 73 degrees twice but no records were broken. We did not have a day with over an inch of rain in February nor did we this entire winter. Our average temps were slightly below average. The recent warm-up helped us gain some ground back to the average. The rain was above average by nearly two inches, marking February 2020 the 35th wettest on record for Charlotte.
