Could we see our first heatwave of the year this week?

We'll likely see our first 90-degree day of the year this weekend and that also means we could see our first heat wave.

Our first 90-degree day of the season is upon us and so is what will likely be the start of our first heatwave. But what exactly is a heatwave and how should you prepare?

A heatwave is a period of abnormally hot and typically humid weather. It is defined as three or more days in a row with a high temperature of 90 degrees or higher.

It’s important, however, to keep in mind average highs. We're on track to see our first 90-degree day of the year by the weekend. However, the average high is only 80 degrees, so temperatures will be climbing 10 to possibly 15 degrees above average into next week.

This intense heat can be dangerous! Heat is the number one weather-related killer in the country, with flooding and tornadoes trailing behind. A combination of high heat and humidity can lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Signs of heat exhaustion include excessive sweating, pale, clammy skin, or muscle cramps. Whereas signs of a heat stroke are headache, no sweating, and a rapid, strong pulse. So, if you see someone suffering from what you believe to be a heat stroke, call 911 immediately.

Also, remember to look before you lock. The inside of a vehicle can reach deadly temperatures in a matter of minutes during hot weather. An outside temperature of 90 degrees translates to 110 degrees inside of your car after only 10 minutes.

After 30 minutes, 90 degrees outside is just over 120 degrees inside your vehicle and after one hour the temperature goes up to just over 130 degrees.

To beat the heat, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and limit your time outdoors.

Remember, stay cool and stay safe!
