Drivers find creative ways around flooding at Boone Mall

A cold, misty day Friday for visitors to Blowing Rock.

BOONE, N.C. -- The heavy was really coming down in the mountains Saturday and Boone is experiencing flooding on several streets and in the town's worst flooding spot: Boone Mall.

"I've never seen it rain like this up here before," said Jonathan Capps. "It's crazy."

As the creek levels continued to rise, barricades were constructed all over town.

"I made the turn in thinking I was going to go get a rain jacket," said Ricky Nagranpa. "Now I've got to go somewhere else."

With the parking lot flooded, the main entrance to the mall became a never-ending cycle of U-turns.

"We were going into the mall and there's caution tape everywhere. So we can't actually get in," said Shyann Ringgold.

For some people, accepting defeat wasn't an option with a trip to the mall on their agenda. Taking matters into their own hands, drivers pushed the barricades out of the way and opened the floodgates for traffic to flow through.

"We get a lot of interesting weather up here," Christy McAlister told WCNC. "So, it's not anything we can't handle."

A Boone Police officer was back an hour later to put the initial blockades back in place. It rains on Ricky Nagranpa's parade, and it's not the first time he's had bad weather shut down a shopping spree.

"It sucks so bad," Nagranpa said. "It's like, if it's not raining, it's snowing."

Bamboo Road and Roby Greene Road were closed and flooded over, so was Boone Golf Course. No injuries have been reported as a result of Boone's flooding and there haven't been any power outages or mud slides.
