Mid-90s on July Fourth with a heat index over 100 degrees in Charlotte

The Fourth of July will be another scorching hot day with a heat index of around 100 degrees.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It's going to be very hot and humid across the Carolinas on the Fourth of July with temperatures in the 90s and a heat index close to 100 degrees.

WCNC Charlotte forecaster Larry Sprinkle says it will be a good day for outdoor plans, but there is a chance for some isolated showers and storms Tuesday evening across the Charlotte area. And much like Monday's storm threat, these won't be widespread or a washout by any means.

Dew points will be in the 70s, meaning it's going to be very muggy across much of North Carolina and South Carolina. And with plenty of sunshine, it'll feel hotter than the forecast high of 92 in Charlotte.

"With a high dew point and temperatures in the low 90s, it's going to feel like 101 in the Charlotte area today and right around 100 as we get to the end of the week on Friday," Sprinkle said.

The UV index is at extreme levels, too, so if you're outdoors, make sure you use sunscreen and stay hydrated. Find as much shade as possible, especially in the afternoon.

As for the storm threat, Sprinkle says the entire Charlotte area will be at risk for pop-up showers but it won't be widespread. Those storms could begin to form by 6 p.m. with showers possible through 10 p.m.
