MOORESVILLE, N.C. – As wind and rain from Tropical Storm Michael pounded Iredell County Thursday afternoon, Veronica and Randy waited out the worst inside their home.
Veronica was sitting on the couch in the family room watching YouTube videos. Her husband, an airline pilot, was sitting on the bed in the bedroom working on his flight schedule.
The house was quiet until a large tree came crashing down onto the home. A large branch crashed through the ceiling of the family room landing a few feet away from where Veronica was sitting. She rushed to the bedroom to check on her husband, but she couldn’t open the door. The tree crashed right through the middle of the bedroom trapping Randy in the bed.
She tried yelling his name, but she couldn’t hear anything because of the wind and rain pounding through the giant hole in the home from the tree.
“I couldn’t move. My wife’s yelling at me. ‘Are you ok?’ But I couldn’t move because I was trapped in there,” Randy Plante said.
Veronica Plante started to panic and called 911.
She called out Randy’s name again and she finally heard his voice telling her he was ok.
Randy Plante was able to push away all of the wood and plywood to eventually free himself before first responders arrived at the home. He walked away with only a scratch on his forehead.
Mooresville Fire says they responded to more than 60 calls for service Thursday afternoon during the height of the storm.
