App State to resume normal operations Friday

The return to normal operations will begin at 4 p.m. on both the campuses in Boone and in Hickory.

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University will resume normal operations on Friday for the first time since Helene. The school has had cancelations and some limited services since the storm produced devastating flooding in western North Carolina.

The return to normal operations will begin at 4 p.m. on both the campuses in Boone and in Hickory. Until then, the school campuses continue to operate on Condition 1 Reduced Operations. Of the school's three-tier adverse weather policy, Condition 1 is the least disruptive. It marks the reduction of non-essential services.

Students were able to resume classes on Oct. 16 when the school moved to Condition 1 after a prolonged closure.

Ahead of normal operations resuming on Friday, some services may remain limited, virtual or canceled. Students are advised to check with their professors about the location and timing of classes.

On Saturday, the school will host its first home football game since Helene. The game against Georgia State begins at 1 p.m. at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Boone and Watauga County are cautiously welcoming back tourists after the storm.

"The core areas of Boone, Blowing Rock, and West Jefferson are welcoming visitor traffic," David Jackson, president and CEO of the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce, previously told WCNC Charlotte.
