BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. — Buncombe County was ravaged by Helene three weeks ago.
Slowly but surely, the county has begun to rebuild and find a new normal. And on Friday, Oct. 18, Buncombe County Schools announced a plan to reopen its doors and welcome students.
Teachers and staff (including bus drivers, TSAs, and nutrition team members) will have Return to Work Days on Wednesday, Oct. 23 and Thursday, Oct. 24.
Students will return to class on Friday, Oct. 25. That day, along with the school days of Monday, Oct. 28 through Nov. 1, will operate on a two-hour delay for students. Oct. 31 will no longer be an early dismissal day. The first semester will be extended to Jan. 24, 2025.
The district said non-potable water service, power and internet were restored to all 45 schools. Drinking water is being delivered. Crews are finishing up repairs on the buildings.
The school district said counselors from neighboring school systems have been added to the staff to help students cope with the disaster.
This announcement is a much-needed step towards normalcy after the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene. Many community members in Buncombe County and surrounding areas are still without power and water.
