Gov. Cooper orders all flags at half-staff in remembrance of those killed in Helene

The order is to recognize one month since Helene struck and in remembrance of the 95 North Carolinians who were killed in the storm.

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. — North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper ordered all U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be placed at half-staff this weekend to mark one month since Hurricane Helene.

The order is for all flags from sunrise on Oct. 26 to sunset on Oct. 27 to mark one month since Helene struck and in remembrance of the 95 North Carolinians who were killed in the storm. Record-breaking rainfall amounts and historic flooding devastated western North Carolina, washing out roads, homes, businesses and critical infrastructure in many mountain communities.

More than 1,700 National Guard and Army Soldiers and Airmen, 1,700 FEMA staff and 1,750 responders from 39 states have come to North Carolina to help with the response.
