Disaster unemployment assistance now available for 25 counties in western North Carolina due to Helene

The Division of Employment Security announced DUA benefits for those whose employment has been lost or interrupted.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Recovering from a natural disaster can be stressful, especially if you can't work. A new line of help is available from the state Division of Employment Security (DES) for neighbors in western North Carolina impacted by Helene's destruction.

Disaster unemployment assistance (DUA) provides temporary payments for people who may fall into one of these categories:

  • No longer have a job
  • Can't get to their job
  • Can't work because of an injury

Individuals and business owners may be eligible if you meet the following criteria:

  • You lived or worked in an area declared by the federal government a disaster 
  • You lost your job or had it interrupted due to Helene
  • You have exhausted or are not eligible for state unemployment benefits

DES states beneficiaries must continue to be out of work due to Helene each week to receive benefits. The aid is also activated for 25 counties in western North Carolina.
