Red Cross needs more Helene relief volunteers

As of Monday, the Red Cross is still operating eight shelters for about 300 people across seven counties.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One month after Helene caused devastating flooding and storm damage to the Carolinas, the American Red Cross says it is still in need of volunteers to help with its ongoing response.

The Red Cross is seeking volunteers to help for a few hours or a couple of days. Volunteers help with tasks such as serving meals, cleaning shelters and organizing activities for shelter residents.

As of Monday, the Red Cross is still operating eight shelters for about 300 people across seven counties. Since the storm, upwards of 80 Red Cross shelters provided 20,000 overnight stays for those displaced from their homes, according to the organization. In total, 400,000 meals, water and snacks have been provided.

Nearly 600 trained volunteers continue to operate in North Carolina. The Red Cross is seeking additional volunteers to join that team. To become a volunteer, you can e-mail the Red Cross or visit their website.

The Red Cross continues to make storm disaster assistance available to those in need by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or on their website.
