NORTH CAROLINA, USA — Four more state parks are partially opening after Helene devastated Western North Carolina in mid-September.
Elk Knob, Lake James, New River and Stone Mountain will be partially reopening on Friday, Nov. 15. Mount Jefferson is expected to reopen before the end of November, according to the Division of Parks and Recreation.
But, Chimney Rock, Mount Mitchell and South Mountains are still expected to be closed for much longer.
The Division of Parks and Recreation recommends coming prepared and using caution while in the state park.
Visitors should bring plenty of water, proper footwear and a hiking buddy. The division warns strongly against going off trail, taking longer excursions, and entering any closed off areas.
