WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. — Watauga County Schools are still feeling the impacts from Hurricane Helene, two weeks since it first ripped through western North Carolina.
The school district announced it will stay closed through next week as the area continues to recover, saying, while primary roads are improving and power outages are being restored, some secondary roads are still not safe.
The district said its transportation department is working with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to assess district school bus stops to ensure they are safe.
During the closure, the district said Green Valley School and Watauga High School will remain open for the community as a resource center throughout the week for those in need of water or supplies. The district said "thanks to the overwhelming amount of supplies and outpouring of support from so many," these centers are full and unable to accept more donations at this time.
