Coastal evacuees find safe place at Charlotte Motor Speedway campground

"They lend a hand out to you and welcome you in and say, 'Come here and we are going to keep you safe until things get better.'"

CONCORD, N.C. — Thousands of people have already hit the road, trying to get out of the path of Dorian, which remains a powerful storm.

Charlotte Motor Speedway opened its campground for anyone needing a place to ride out the hurricane. Pam Bahn and her husband were headed to Myrtle Beach in their RV when word of Dorian turned them around.

“We are just going to hang out here till Saturday and then we are going to head there and hope it is still there,” Bahn said.

Lyne Fulton and her husband are taking shelter at the speedway for the second time.

Two years ago they first heard about the Speedway when they were evacuated. When it happened again this past week, they headed back, grateful they had a place to go.

“They lend a hand out to you and welcome you in and say, ‘Come here and we are going to keep you safe until things get better,” she told NBC Charlotte.

In Rock Hill, South Carolina, the BMX track has opened its campground as well to anyone who has been evacuated due to Hurricane Dorian.

The campground has over 40 RV hookups, as well as water and electricity.
