Heavy rain, gusty winds moving into the Charlotte area

Stay weather aware tonight due to excessive rainfall and gusty winds.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Rain will continue to impact the Charlotte area tonight.

The Potential Tropical Cyclone is producing heavy rain, tropical-storm-force winds along the coast. The area of low pressure is now moving inland and brining similar impacts to the Piedmont.

Locally, there are alerts in effect to make sure everyone is staying weather aware and prepared for the impacts. The biggest concerns are flash flooding and gusty winds.

Once it moves inland it will slow down but by Tuesday afternoon, rain intensities will decrease as the system loses a moisture supply provided by the Atlantic Ocean.

While this system will bring a wide range of rain across the Carolinas, rainfall amounts and flooding impacts are expected to be less than those seen during Tropical Storm Debby in August.

Stay Weather Aware Monday evening through early Tuesday. Get ready for rounds of showers arriving in the Charlotte area by midday Monday. Expect light to moderate showers to become widespread during the early afternoon hours on Monday. Heavy rain is likely at times especially east of Interstate 77, where excessive rainfall could lead to flash flooding.

As a result of the rain impact, the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the Charlotte area.

Wind

Gusty winds could peak upwards of 40 to 45 mph. Some areas in the Piedmont have already experienced 25 to 30 mph wind gusts over the weekend. A combination of extended wind gusts and persistent rainfall could have impact on tree damage and power outages. Stay Weather Aware through Tuesday for potential impacts and use caution if you encounter storm debris and flooding.
