Overnight Charlotte house fire caused by lightning strike, officials say

The fire caused an estimated $82,000 in damage, investigators said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A large house fire in north Charlotte that happened early Monday was caused by a lightning strike, investigators said.

The Charlotte Fire Department responded to a house fire along Ribbonwalk Trail, which is just off Gibbon Road and Nevin Road, around midnight. It took a team of 30 firefighters about 20 minutes to get the fire under control, officials said. No one was home when the fire started and there weren't any injuries, according to CFD.

Investigators determined the fire was started by a lightning strike on the roof. The flames started in a small loft over the garage and spread to the attic. Six people, including three children, were displaced by the fire and are being assisted by the Red Cross.

Charlotte fire investigators say the estimated damage to the house is $82,000.
