GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Gaston County's first responders are warning boaters to be careful in the Catawba River basin as a large amount of debris left over from June's storms could create treacherous conditions.
Their concerns are amplified as the next 10 days are expected to be the busiest stretch of the boating season.
Gaston County Master Patrol Officer Ron Robinson said he and his officers have seen damaged docks, tree branches and wood planks floating in the river, which could cause damage to boats.
"I've been out here for a long time, and the last two or three weeks are the worst I've ever seen it," Ofc. Robinson said.
He pointed to what looked like a large patch of grass floating in the water.
"With all the distractions on your boat, you run up on that, that's not going to be good for you, your passengers [or] your boat," he said.
Officer Robinson urged people to take a water safety course, and he said boat operators should ensure they have enough life jackets and working safety equipment on their boat.
"You're being smart on the water, paying attention for debris in the water, paying attention to other boaters and what they're doing," Ofc. Robinson said. "You're responsible for those people that are on your boat."
