Stay weather aware: Showers and isolated storms in the region this evening

The greatest threat for severe storms Sunday afternoon is at the coast, but there could still be an isolated strong storm this evening elsewhere, especially across the mountains and foothills.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The region is under a low risk for severe storms Sunday, but the same was the case going into Saturday. Meteorologist Chris Mulcahy believes the worst of the storms will be south and east of the region.

Mother's Day will be overcast with some bright spots or filtered sunshine trying to brighten up the day. Any sunshine will destabilize the atmosphere so there will still be showers and storms with the chance for a couple of strong ones, but it looks like yesterday was more active.

The severe weather threat has diminished, according to Meteorologist Iisha Scott. The greatest threat for severe storms Sunday afternoon is the coast, but there could still be an isolated strong storm this evening elsewhere, especially across the mountains and foothills.

There could be spotty showers and storms into the evening, but it will eventually clear out and dry up by Monday.

A tornado warning was issued for Anson, Montgomery, Richmond and Stanly counties until 5:15 p.m. Saturday A tornado was not spotted on the ground but was radar-indicated.  After it expired, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Anson County until 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

A tornado warning was issued for Gaston and Mecklenburg counties until 3:15 p.m. Saturday It has since expired. A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect for Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties until 3:45 p.m. Saturday. Those have since expired.

Inbound flights were being held at their origin until 4:30 p.m. Saturday due to thunderstorms, according to Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

There are reports of storm damage in Belmont, including a downed tree.

Panovich said the severe weather outlook ranges from low to medium Saturday, with a large portion of the viewing area in the medium range.

"Heavy rain is our biggest issue but any sunshine could lead to strong to severe storms," he said.

"Once the front arrives on Sunday afternoon, we are looking at a moderate potential for strong to severe storms," said Mulcahy. "Damaging winds and heavy rain will be the main threats. With all of the rain we will see Saturday followed by downpours Sunday, flash flooding is at its highest on Sunday."

Morning is the best time of day for any Mother's Day plans. There is a chance for a few spotty showers, but most of the heavy rain and threatening weather will be an afternoon event.
