CHARLOTTE, N.C. — For the second consecutive day, Charlotte saw a record-high temperature Thursday afternoon.
Charlotte hit 83 degrees just before 3 p.m. Thursday, breaking the record of 82 set in 2005. WCNC Charlotte Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich said the Queen City has a real shot of tying or breaking the record for the highest late-year temperature of 84, which was set on Nov. 17, 1958.
Thursday marked the third straight day with temperatures in the 80s in Charlotte. That's the third-most 80-degree days for the month of November all time, Panovich said.
The record-breaking highs in Charlotte are a localized version of a story that's made headlines globally, with 2023 likely to become the hottest year on record. Earlier this year, Charlotte set or tied record highs on Jan. 19, Feb. 23, Feb. 28, Oct. 29-30 and Nov. 8.
This past October was the hottest on record globally, 3.1 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the pre-industrial average for the month — and the fifth straight month with such a mark in what will now almost certainly be the warmest year ever recorded.
