MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. -- With water levels at some of their lowest points in recent memory on Lake Wylie, boaters have to be extra careful this holiday weekend.

Strawberry Wooten cruises Lake Wylie Friday testing out a new boat. Despite the low water levels Wooten says he'll be out on the water over Labor Day weekend.

"It's not going to stop us. As long as the landings are open, we'll use them," said Wooten.

Wooten hopes the crowds come out to the lake to give Boat Sales of Lake Wylie some new customers.

"We're going to have a boat show and try to sell some boats," said Wooten.

Wooten says the levels have not been this low since 2007.

Max Phillips has enjoyed Lake Wylie for more than 60 years, and says he believes the levels will impact turnout.

"The lake levels are a pain but I guess you learn to live with it," said Phillips, of Rock Hill.

Phillips says his family will still be on the lake over the weekend.

Two ramps at Buster Boyd access are already closed and Wooten hopes the other two remain open.

"In '07 they closed all the landings. It's not quite that low yet, but it's on its way. If they keep pulling water like they have the last two days, they will shut all the landings," said Wooten

Duke Energy's most recent data from Lake Wylie and Lake Norman indicates both lakes are about 3-and-a-half feet below their target point.
