LIST: How school districts in the Carolinas responded to severe weather threats
As school districts across the area balance in-person and remote learning, district leaders discussed the safest and smartest options.
Brad Panovich and the WCNC Charlotte First Warn Storm Team tracked severe weather which impacted Charlotte and the Carolinas Thursday. As communities across the Carolinas prepared for potential storms, many school districts got plans in place.
Prior to the pandemic, the big question would be will schools stay open or close for the day. But as school districts across the area balance in-person and remote learning, district leaders are now discussing the safest and smartest options.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district leaders said the district moved to full remote learning Thursday.
"The district places the safety of our students, staff and schools at the forefront and will take all precautions to keep everyone safe," district leaders said in a statement.
Iredell-Statesville Schools
In a statement to WCNC Charlotte, Iredell-Statesville Schools said it operated on a normal schedule Thursday and monitored the conditions to keep parents and students updated.
Rowan-Salisbury Schools
WCNC Charlotte reached out to the Rowan-Salisbury Schools district for information on any possible changes to the Thursday schedule. At this point, WCNC has not heard back.
Lincoln County Schools
Lincoln County Schools confirmed to WCNC Charlotte that the district would remain on its normal schedule. District leaders confirmed the school would not be moving to a virtual learning day for the students currently learning in person.
Catawba County Schools
Catawba County Schools district leaders said the district and its emergency management preparedness partners had evaluated the weather threat at this time.
"No changes have been made at this point in time, although that could change based on information as it is made available," district leaders said, in part, in a statement to WCNC Charlotte.
Gaston County Schools
WCNC Charlotte reached out to the Gaston County Schools district for information on any possible changes to the Thursday schedule. At this point, WCNC has not heard back.
Cleveland County Schools
WCNC Charlotte reached out to the Cleveland County Schools district for information on any possible changes to the Thursday schedule. At this point, WCNC has not heard back.
Caldwell County Schools
WCNC Charlotte reached out to the Caldwell County Schools district for information on any possible changes to the Thursday schedule. At this point, WCNC has not heard back.

The Newton Conover Schools district has confirmed to WCNC Charlotte that no changes were planned for Thursday's schedule.
Mooresville Graded School District
WCNC Charlotte has reached out to the Mooresville Graded School District for information on any possible changes to the Thursday schedule. At this point, WCNC has not heard back.
Union County Schools
Union County Public Schools district leaders said they are evaluating Thursday's weather threat, but have not made changes to Thursday's schedule at this time.
If changes are made as the threat of severe weather develops, the district will notify parents and employees through standard communication channels.
Hickory Public Schools
At this time, Hickory Public Schools district leaders confirm no changes have been made to Thursday's schedule.
Ashe County Schools
WCNC Charlotte has reached out to the Ashe County Schools district for information on any possible changes to the Thursday schedule. At this point, WCNC has not heard back.
Avery County Schools
At this time, Avery County Schools district leaders confirm no changes have been made to Thursday's schedule.
Watauga County Schools
WCNC Charlotte has reached out to the Watauga County Schools district for information on any possible changes to the Thursday schedule. At this point, WCNC has not heard back.
Cabarrus County Schools
Cabarrus County Schools will move to full remote learning Thursday as a precaution to the severe weather forecast.
Stanly County Schools
Stanly County Schools will operate on a standard schedule Thursday, according to district leaders. However, school district officials said administrators will continue monitoring weather conditions and evaluate if changes are needed based on how weather threats develop.
Burke County Schools
WCNC Charlotte has reached out to the Burke County Schools district for information on any possible changes to the Thursday schedule. At this point, WCNC has not heard back.
Alexander County Schools
WCNC Charlotte has reached out to the Alexander County Schools district for information on any possible changes to the Thursday schedule. At this point, WCNC has not heard back.
Kannapolis City Schools
Kannapolis City Schools district leaders told WCNC Charlotte there are not currently any plans to change Thursday's schedule.
"We have made all schools aware of the possibility of severe weather for tomorrow so that they could remind staff of the procedures, should they be necessary," the district said, in part, in a statement. "We will be monitoring conditions and will make changes as needed for the safety and wellbeing of students and staff."
Anson County Schools
Anson County Schools district leaders told WCNC Charlotte a decision would be made by Wednesday early evening regarding Thursday's schedule.
Fort Mill Schools
Fort Mill School District leaders have decided to operate on an eLearning schedule Thursday. All students will participate in eLearning. The goal, district leaders said, is to ensure learning continues while students, parents and staff stay safely off the roadways at crucial times.
All afterschool activities, programs and athletic events are also canceled.
Rock Hill School District
WCNC Charlotte has reached out to the Rock Hill School District for information on any possible changes to the Thursday schedule. At this point, WCNC has not heard back.
Lancaster County School District
Lancaster County School District will be moving to a virtual learning day Thursday for all students and staff due to expected weather concerns.
Chester County School District
The Chester County School District will operate on a remote learning day Thursday in response to expected severe weather conditions.
The district sent the following statement to WCNC Charlotte:
"The National Weather Service issued a statement calling for severe weather on Thursday, March 18, 2021 including heavy rainfall, hail, and strong winds. These conditions also have a potential for flooding, making the roads unsafe for our buses, student drivers, staff, and traveling families. For the safety of our school community, the district will use tomorrow as a remote eLearning day for all students and staff. Students will be contacted by their teachers for daily assignments. All afterschool activities including sports, and IMPACT will also be canceled tomorrow.
Normal operations will resume on Friday, March 19th 2021."
Chesterfield County School District
Chesterfield County School District leaders told WCNC Charlotte that a decision regarding potentially changing Thursday's schedule has not yet been made.
York School District One
York School District One has not yet made any changes to Thursday's schedule, but district leaders said they would monitor weather conditions and make an announcement if any changes are made.
Clover School District
Clover School District told WCNC Charlotte district leaders were speaking with the National Weather Service to determine if any changes should be made based on potential impacts.
