CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It was a busy last week of 2021, but right on schedule, the latest United States drought monitor was released on Thursday, December 30.
Changes were extremely minor. The abnormally dry conditions in North Carolina didn't nudge at all, while South Carolina saw their abnormally dry conditions increase by 0.5%.
Neither state saw a shift in numbers for the moderate drought or severe drought.
How much rain do we still need?
According to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport sensor, the Queen City ended 2021 about 7.93 inches drier than average. Unfortunately, this trend will likely continue due to the expected La Nina winter.
Even though rain is in the forecast late Saturday and through Sunday, it comes with the threat of severe weather too. It'll be some, but not enough to shatter the building deficit.
