Weather Impact Aware: Flash flooding risk on Thursday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After weeks of high temperatures and dry conditions, a wet pattern has settled over the Charlotte area, bringing inches of much-needed rain to the region. 

The WCNC Weather Impact Team wants the Charlotte area to stay Weather Aware on Thursday due to the the threat of flash flooding and excessive rain.

When

Specifically the afternoon has the highest threats for the heaviest rain for your Thursday, July 25. Rain will still linger in the evening but the best chance for thunderstorms will be during the afternoon. Scattered rain, possible through the overnight as well.

Forecast

Showers and thunderstorms are likely with periods of heavy rain, and localized flash flooding will be possible.

The last week has primed the soil for potential flooding, and this is why it is a Weather Impact Aware Day.

A range of 2-5 inches of rain fell across the Greater Charlotte Area over the last week, priming our soil for flash flooding.

Between two and five inches of rain have already fallen over the course of July 18-24 around the greater Charlotte area. An additional one to two inches of rain are forecast through Thursday which increases the flash flooding risk since the soil is saturated.

How to stay safe

When flash flooding is a threat in the area, it's important to stay Weather Aware by: 

  • Turning around when you see flooded roads
  • When thunder roars, go indoors
  • Have a safe, elevated place to go if you live in a flood-prone areas
  • Staying prepared by checking your WCNC Charlotte news app for updates
  • Bringing an umbrella or waterproof shoes
