BLOWING ROCK, N.C. — The North Carolina mountains need to continue to be Weather Aware as more winter weather continues through Saturday morning in the High Country. Areas like Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain are snow covered. And Sugar Mountain even announced their opening day is officially today (Nov. 22).

Accumulation

Already the mountains have seen 2 to 4 inches of snow as of 10 a.m. with some of the mountain tops measuring up to 7 inches. The Winter Weather Advisory will remain in effect through Friday and end Saturday morning. The advisory will end at 7 a.m. but the snow should be done much earlier than that. Another 2 to 3 inches of snow is still possible to fall (especially above 4,000 feet).

Impacts

The snow intensity will overall be light, but over time, it will continue to add up. Make sure to prepare ahead of time with winter gear and devices charged in case of power outages! Winds will be gusting up to 50 mph through the afternoon and evening. The most recent Wind Advisory starts at noon on Friday and extends until 6 a.m. Saturday.

  • Expect roads to become slippery with deteriorating conditions well through Saturday morning.
  • Winds will be high at times creating blowing snow and lower visibilities!
  • Wind chills will be in the teens all day Friday and Saturday morning so plan to dress for full-blown winter.
  • As highs return above freezing over the weekend, there is a threat for a refreeze and black ice the following mornings.
