CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hundreds of flights to and from Charlotte have been canceled or delayed due to winter storms across the country as cold weather freezes the Carolinas this week.
Severe and wintry weather can mean delays or even cancellations for flights to and from Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Tuesday was no exception with hundreds of flights being impacted, according to the flight-tracking tool FlightAware.
As of 11 p.m. Tuesday, Charlotte Douglas recorded 517 delays with 95 flights being canceled. The majority of those flights were through American Airlines, which is based at CLT. FlightAware reported 42 cancellations and 281 delays for American flights, with regional carriers PSA Airlines and Piedmont following close behind. Flights out of New York, Nashville and Newark were among those canceled Tuesday.
Many of these cancellations and delays come as Charlotte sees its coldest temperatures since December 2022. Wednesday's highs will only be in the low 40s and it's only going to get colder through the weekend. Meteorologist Chris Mulcahy's forecast calls for weekend lows in the teens and single-digit wind chills across the Charlotte metro.
The mountains had it much worse, with over a foot of snow causing a traffic nightmare in Beech Mountain on Monday. Multiple crashes were reported on Beech Mountain Parkway, with some people telling WCNC Charlotte it took hours just to drive a few miles due to the slick conditions.
