Deputies unsure how alligator made its way to Rowan County

A Rowan County deputy was driving toward Spencer Sunday morning when he saw something in the road that wasn't supposed to be there: An alligator.

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — An alligator that was found in Rowan County was relocated to a zoo in eastern North Carolina, officials announced Monday. 

A Rowan County deputy was traveling on Long Ferry Road toward Spencer a little before 5 a.m. Sunday when he saw the alligator in the road. Sgt. Crews stopped and called the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, which took custody of the alligator.

State wildlife officials say the gator was taken to a zoo in eastern North Carolina where it's being taken care of. However, deputies aren't sure where the gator came from or how it made its way onto the road. 

No one was hurt during the incident. The sheriff's office shared a photo of an oficer holding the gator at a gas station shortly after it was captured.

This wasn't the only wild animal encounter in North Carolina this week. Greensboro police "arrested" a massive 9-foot python that was found underneath a car last Friday. Animal control officials suspect the snake is someone's pet that escaped but so far the python hasn't been claimed.
