CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Earlier this month, 37-year-old Daniel Gomez was shot and killed, leaving behind his 6-year-old dog, Zeus. Unfortunately, after Gomez died, Zeus had nowhere to go. Instances like this happen more than you may think.
No one ever thinks their pets will outlive them, but in some cases, it happens. If there's no plan for who gets your pet, they could end up at the pound. A nonprofit in Charlotte, AnimalCity, is working to ensure every animal gets a second chance.
Parading around a backyard in north Charlotte, Zeus is now in a transition period. After his owner was killed, Leah Henrichsen and her team at AnimalCity got to work to help Zeus.
“I think he is in the best possible place he could be right now," Henrichsen said. “We step in when we can. And the thing about this case, is that we were able to step in because we had a foster family.”
Right now, Zeus is on a trial run with a loving family and hanging out with his possible soon-to-be-brother Skeeter.
“I’m hoping things continue to go smoothly for this potential adopted family," Henrichsen said. “This is our best success story yet, oh my gosh.”
