GASTONIA, N.C. — A K-9 officer with the Gastonia Police Department was named the Law Enforcement Hero Dog of the Year for his exceptional service, dedication and life-saving efforts in the community.
Bo, a beloved bloodhound who's been instrumental in finding missing people, tracking down suspects and supporting investigations, brought home the prestigious national award on Saturday, Oct. 19. The American Humane Association presents the Law Enforcement Hero Dog of the Year.
"Bo's extraordinary skill and determination exemplify the best of what we hope for in our K-9 officers," Chief Trent Conard said. "His work not only enhances public safety in Gastonia, but also brings peace of mind to families in their most difficult moments."
Bo's standout case was helping track down a missing child in a densely wooded area. The bloodhound tracked the boy's scent for 7 miles, leading to a safe rescue. Sgt. David Rowland, Bo's handler, says his tracking success rate of 95% is well above the typical number for K-9s.
“If it wasn't for Bo that night, I don't know what would have happened to that child,” Rowland continued.
He is now entered in another contest with other category winners as they vie for Top Dog of 2024. The Top Dog winner will be announced in January.
