4 Black Friday shopping tips

With Black Friday deals starting earlier and earlier, it can be hard to know you're getting the best deal. These tips will help get the most bang for your buck.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It's not even Thanksgiving and stores are already gearing up for Black Friday with great deals and savings for holiday shoppers.

It seems like Black Friday deals are shifting earlier and earlier as retailers pull out all the stops to get shoppers into their stores or buying items online. Because of this, it can be hard to know when and how to find the best deals and discounts.

So how can you know you're finding the best deals?

First off, start early. According to Consumer Reports, sales have already begun and retailers are offering deals on items in virtually every category. If you find the exact item for less a few months down the road, don't worry. Many stores offer a holiday refund and return policy that includes partial refunds for items that go on sale later in the season.

Next, skip in-store sales and shop online. While many deals will be available to both kinds of shoppers, you'll probably have more luck and more options shopping on your phone or computer than going into a store.

Utilize loyalty programs. Retail loyalty programs often give members early access to coupons, sales and promotions and allow customers to earn rewards on what they buy. A new survey found that 65% of shoppers intend to use loyalty or rewards accounts to save money during the holiday shopping season.

Finally, stick to your budget! It sounds simple, but don't get caught up in the excitement and overspend. Decide ahead of time how much you want to spend on Black Friday shopping and do your best to stay under that amount.
