CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A judge declared a mistrial in a 2018 Charlotte murder case after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict.
Davenon Farmer, 45, and Demetric Williams, 46, were both charged with first-degree murder, two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon in connection with the killing of William Jacobs in 2018. The trial began on Feb. 12, but when the jury indicated it couldn't reach a verdict, Judge J. Thomas Davis declared a mistrial.
Jacobs was found shot to death along Timberbrook Drive in northwest Charlotte on the night of April 15, 2018. Detectives said he was inside an apartment with several other people when he was shot. Farmer was arrested the next day. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said the shooting wasn't random and that Farmer knew Jacobs.
WCNC Charlotte has reached out to Mecklenburg County officials to learn how they plan to proceed with the case. It's unclear if or when a new trial will be scheduled.
Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
