CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Editor's note: The suspects in this case were arrested shortly after the incident took place, which the story did not indicate.
An investigation is underway after a CVS in Plaza Midwood was robbed Tuesday evening, leaving two people injured.
According to the incident report from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, one of the suspects tried to leave the store without paying for merchandise and hit someone in the head with a weapon on the way out.
The report says another suspect assaulted a woman.
Shortly after the robbery, Derrick Oakes, 38, and Kerri Oakes, 34, were arrested in connection to the incident, CMPD said. Derrick Oakes is charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury, assault on a female and resisting a public officer.
People in the area said they’re surprised this happened here because the area is “typically safe.”
“[I'm] not surprised because it’s Charlotte, but surprised because of the area," Plaza Midwood resident Gregory Lawrence told WCNC Charlotte's Anna King. "Typically it’s safe here. I normally feel at peace."
Another resident, Brendan Kelly, said he was not surprised at all.
“It’s the city, it happens all the time – no matter where you are," Kelly said. "Robberies can happen anywhere in the city so I’m not surprised or worried either."
Both victims in this robbery are expected to be okay.
