Suspect in stolen Dodge Charger arrested after police chase, crash

The suspect led officers on a chase for nearly 30 minutes before crashing into another vehicle and being arrested.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A suspect driving a stolen Dodge Charger was arrested after crashing while fleeing from police near Uptown on Friday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said.

Officers attempted to stop the suspect, who was wanted on a warrant for assault with a deadly weapon, when they saw him driving a Dodge Charger on Interstate 85 near Interstate 77 in north Charlotte. The suspect refused to pull over and drove away from officers at a high rate of speed. The officers chased the suspect and CMPD's helicopter followed the suspect as he drove around Charlotte and into Uptown, investigators said.

The suspect crashed the vehicle at the intersection of Charlottetowne Avenue and East Seventh Street, near Memorial Stadium, around 11:30 a.m. The suspect jumped from the car and ran before he was arrested by the pursuing officers. CMPD initially believed this incident was possibly linked to another wreck in west Charlotte, but detectives determined the two crashes were not connected.

Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
