Man shot by CMPD in Beatties Ford Road incident gets $60K bond

Tim Moore's next court date is March 4, 2024.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The man shot and wounded by Charlotte police on Feb. 8 made an appearance in court Tuesday, where a judge considered another pending charge when setting his bond.

Tim Moore, 33, appeared via video for the bond-setting hearing. He faces several charges from Thursday's incident, including assault on a public official and possession of a gun by a convicted felon.

The Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Office mentioned during the hearing that Moore also had pending charges from September 2022 for communicating threats and assault on a woman. A bond of $15,000 was requested because of the new and previous charges.

The Assistant District Attorney also shared new details about what led up to the scene on Thursday. According to the office, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer who was using a "real-time crime camera" saw a video of Moore in a car with another man making a drug deal. The officer also claimed he saw Moore raise a gun inside the car before "waving it menacingly". The officer then made contact with Moore, who started to walk down an alley.

The officer, according to the district attorney's office, said backup arrived and approached Moore, who then started running. The officer then said Moore reached for his waistband, something the Assistant District Attorney said was "consistent with people who have weapons". The ADA noted a 35 mm handgun was recovered at the scene.

Moore's public defender requested pre-trial release. The current case and Moore's pending case were consolidated for bond-setting purposes.

The judge said the severity of the allegations led him to not set the requested $15,000 bond. Instead, the judge set Moore's secured bond at $60,000, citing the interest of public safety.

Moore will next appear in court on March 4.

CMPD said on Thursday Moore aimed a gun at officers as he ran from them on Beatties Ford Road, prompting an officer to shoot. Moore was hit and then taken to a hospital for treatment per the department.

Family members said that day that Moore faces mental health challenges and needs treatment. CMPD officials said officers don't have the luxury in all situations to determine a person's mental health needs or capacity.

An officer-involved shooting in December 2023 happened just down the road from Thursday's shooting, which saw the suspect die at the scene. CMPD said the suspect was pointing a gun at another man before interacting with police and refusing to comply with commands.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate both the December incident and the one on Thursday.
