HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Dwayne Helms has been identified as the man seen on surveillance video trying to break into a west Charlotte home last month, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said on Monday. Investigators are trying to find Helms, who is wanted for attempted breaking and entering.
Ring video captured the moments Helms is accused of aggressively trying to enter the Charlotte home. In the video, the man identified by police as Helms can be seen holding a gun.
After that video was released in November, a Huntersville resident told WCNC Charlotte he believed the same man was outside his home.
"It's definitely the same guy that was here," Marvin Henry said. "I recognized the guy [in the WCNC Charlotte story]. It was the same guy on September 21st."
Henry said he went out to water his grass around 5 a.m. and noticed a truck parked on the side of his home. He said after going back inside, he then saw a man standing in his backyard.
"The guy that was in your video, I saw him standing in the backyard," Henry said. "If I had not come out to water that grass things would have been different."
At the time, the Huntersville Police Department could not confirm whether or not they believed it was the same man. WCNC Charlotte followed up with them on Monday now that CMPD has identified their suspect as Helms.
In addition to identifying Helms, CMPD also released a clearer picture of Helms and the truck he is believed to drive.
Anyone with information about Helms is asked to call Charlotte-Mecklenburg Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
