Suspect in east Charlotte homicide arrested in Texas, CMPD says

The victim was found shot to death behind a Captain D's restaurant in east Charlotte last week.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A suspect who was wanted in connection with a deadly shooting in east Charlotte last week was arrested in Texas, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said. 

CMPD responded to a reported shooting behind a Captain D's restaurant on North Sharon Amity Road, near the intersection with Central Avenue and Albemarle Road, on Oct. 14. When officers arrived, they found 25-year-old Jose Antonio Meji-Gaona suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Detectives identified Julio Cesar Chacon Venegas, 41, as a suspect in the case. He was located near San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday, Oct. 19, and taken into custody by the Texas Rangers and local authorities. Venegas is facing extradition back to North Carolina and is charged with murder. 

The case marked 84 homicides so far in 2024, which is about a 28% increase from 2023.
