Ammunition found on parent of student at Sedgefield Middle School, secured gun found in car

Twice this week, adults have been charged with having a gun on educational property.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — School officers found ammunition in a parent's bag when they were dropping off a student on Tuesday at Sedgefield Middle School, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials confirmed. Security scanners detected the bullets, and the school resource officer coordinated with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, and officials found a gun locked and secured in a car.

Students were placed under a "no movement" protocol and kept in classrooms while CMPD was investigating as a precaution, the district said, and learning was not disrupted. CMPD confirmed no threats were made and no injuries were reported.

Kenyatta Alexander-Paul, 36, was arrested for bringing a gun onto educational property, according to a magistrates order. She had a first appearance Wednesday, and her bond was set at $5,000. She is expected to appear in court again on Sept. 17 for these charges.

Then on Wednesday, Oakdale Elementary School was put on a lockdown after a "disturbance during morning arrival." Students and staff at the school sheltered in place and were held on buses during that investigation. Shanique Williamson, 31, was arrested and charged with two counts of bringing a gun onto educational property. Her bond was set at $10,000. CMPD confirmed the incident did not involve any students and was not related to anything on school property, but did not provide further information.
