False threat at Lake Norman HS prompts felony charges, sheriff says

Investigators said a juvenile is facing charges for allegedly implicating another student in a plan to commit a shooting at Lake Norman High School.

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. β€” A student is facing charges after an alleged threat to Lake Norman High School, Iredell County deputies said.

The Iredell County Sheriff's Office received multiple reports of an alleged shooting threat at Lake Norman High School on Sunday, Sept. 15. Deputies received the information after multiple other investigations into a social media post about school shootings nationwide.

During the investigation, deputies determined that a juvenile falsely created a document implicating another student in a plan to commit a shooting at the school. The post was shared among students at multiple schools in Iredell County.

The sheriff's office presented the information to the Department of Juvenile Services and the student was charged with making a false report concerning mass violence on education property and cyberbullying. Both charges are felonies, investigators said.

The arrest comes after a series of threats were received at other schools in the Charlotte area, including Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties. Two juveniles were arrested in connection with the Cleveland and Gaston threats. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools also investigated a threat made to West Charlotte High School and a bomb threat at Bailey Middle School in Cornelius.

In a message sent to parents, school leaders said it takes any reported or perceived threats, and that students violating the Code of Student Conduct by making a threat "will be disciplined accordingly." Parents were asked to talk with their kids about the seriousness of the situation.

"We understand that several students heard about the threat, and we want to assure you that we are doing all we can to ensure the safety and security of staff and students," the message said, in part.
