CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says a suspect is now facing charges for a homicide that unfolded more than two months ago.
On Wednesday, the department announced the arrest of 18-year-old Eric Dion Caldwell. He is now charged with murder and discharging a firearm into occupied property.
Caldwell is accused of shooting and killing 19-year-old Lawahon Dwight Hutchinson during a shooting in October 2023. It happened early in the morning along Acorn Forest Lane near Old Statesville Road in north Charlotte. Hutchinson was declared dead at the scene by Medic.
CMPD said the person who reported the shooting told officers there were people inside the home when the gunfire rang out, and that it had been shot into several times.
The investigation is still active and ongoing. CMPD has promised to share updates once new information is available.
Anyone with more information can call (704) 432-TIPS to talk with a homicide detective directly. Anonymous tips can be shared with Crime Stoppers by submitting one online or by calling (704) 334-1600.
Caldwell's first appearance before a judge is set for Thursday, Jan. 4 at 10 a.m.
Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
WCNC Charlotte has chosen to use this mugshot because of the severity of the charges.
