Suspect killed by Rock Hill deputy was armed with a baseball bat, investigators say

The shooting happened on Ellis Pond Drive.

ROCK HILL, S.C. — A Rock Hill man was shot and killed by a deputy with the York County Sheriff's Office on Sunday morning, according to the sheriff.

The coroner’s office identified the man as 52-year-old Richard Zonjic. According to state investigators, Zonjic was holding a baseball bat when a deputy shot him.

The shooting happened on Ellis Pond Drive, which is not far from downtown Rock Hill.

Deputies were responding to "a domestic violence incident," when the shooting took place.

No deputies were hurt.

The York County Sheriff's Office identified the deputy who shot Zonjic as Senior Deputy Daniel Barfield.

State authorities are investigating. They said deputies went to the house after someone called 911.

Deputies tried to serve Zonjic warrants for kidnapping and domestic violence charges, but he barricaded himself in the home for several hours.

State investigators said the man was holding a baseball bat when Barfield shot him.

Barfield, who had been with the sheriff's office for one year, was put on paid administrative leave.

Last month, a York County deputy shot and killed a man who was barricaded in his car on Alexander Love Highway. York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson said the deputy in that case was placed on paid administrative leave as part of protocol.

The shooting investigations come as four Republican candidates are racing to win the June primary and fill the sheriff's role. One of those candidates is the current sheriff's wife, Beth Tolson.

The current sheriff withdrew from the race in March to support his wife's candidacy.
